How Often Should You (Really) Visit The Dentist

Canadians, in general, take good care of their oral hygiene and their health. It is estimated that three-quarters of Canadians visit their dentist at least once a year. Although, the recommended health guidelines do state that individuals should be attending at least twice a year.

Of course, this frequency of visits will differ based on the age and nature of the visit. The CDA recommends for children to visit a dentist for the first time at the age of one. In fact, tooth decay accounts for almost ⅓ of all day surgeries performed on children between the ages of 1 and 5. Compared to the rest of the world, Canada has ranked high among the best access to oral care health, coming in 5th place. Despite some of the best access, the majority of dentists work on solving a problem for patients, instead of helping them prevent it.

Common issues include tooth decay, cavities or gum disease. These issues can lead to more pain, complications and money after a period, compared to identifying a problem sooner. For some, cost still remains as a compelling reason for not visiting a dentist. However, the Alberta Dental Association has outlined that current fees have actually decreased by 8.5% compared to 2016 for the most common dental procedures.

For those who have dental insurance coverage, any unused amount paid for the year will reset on January 1st. This means that if you have used funds for dental coverage will be lost in the new year, and it will not be rolled over to the next.
The end of the year always serves as a great time to schedule in your second teeth cleaning or dental appointment to ensure you are maximizing the use of your coverage. It is a good idea to schedule your appointment sooner, rather than later, as the end of the year can become a busy time of year.

If you’re looking for teeth cleaning or to schedule an appointment before the end of the year, contact Oliver Park Dental today.
