We have already covered 80 women in our series on Edmonton’s top businesswomen and still there are so many more to talk about! We thank The Wanderer and Avenue Edmonton for being our inspiration for this series – their articles of recognition for a lot of these women pushed our research for the achievements listed below. The innovation and sheer dedication that these women have shown is exemplary, achieving success while balancing out their personal and professional lives.

1.     Carrie LangevinMother Earth Essentials

As a teacher of Aboriginal Education, Carrie amassed immense traditional, Aboriginal knowledge of herbs and essential oils. Armed with this knowledge, she started Mother Earth Essentials to bring this knowledge to a worldwide audience by using 100% natural ingredients.

 2.     Patricia Lachance – La Bebe Boutique

Patricia Lachance started the La Bebe Boutique in 2010 with a vision to make avant garde baby products easily available to Edmontonians. Her promotion of local goods is reflected in 60% of her products which are made in Canada, while 70% of her suppliers are Canadians.

 3.     Karen MacKenzieMacKintosh Consulting

Karen MacKenzie is the Co-Founder and President of MacKintosh Canada, an Aboriginal owned, international consulting company and former Director, First Nations Relations for Government of Alberta. She holds an MBA degree and has worked extensively abroad in the US, the UK, Ireland, Eastern Europe, and Africa.

4.     Indira SamarasekaraUniversity of Alberta

Indira is now in her second term as the President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Alberta having encouraged development of projects through her “Dare to Discover” initiative, collectively surpassing $1 billion. She has been awarded Order of Canada and fellowship of the Royal Society of Canada.

 5.     Sherri TaylorMS Society of Canada

Sherri has been involved in volunteer work for multiple causes she believes in. The most prominent of these is her 8 year involvement with the MS Society of Canada which raises funds for finding a cure for Multiple Sclerosis. She is an active member of the Alberta Gymnastics Board of Directors and manager of a hockey and soccer team.

 6.     Kathy SchmidtKathy Schmidt Realty Group

Kathy has been one of the most trusted realtors of Edmonton with her company Schmidt Realty completing seven years. In 2011, Kathy was awarded the Realtor of the Year Award by Realtors Association of Edmonton for dedicated service to her customers.

7.     Eleni StrouliaNSERC and Canadian Writing Research Collaboratory

Dr Eleni Stroulia is one of the most accomplished minds in the computing world. She is a Research Chair of NSERC/iCORE, Canada and leads the Software Systems research group in the Department of Computing Science at the University of Alberta. She is also the Principal Investigator for the Canadian Writing Research Collaboratory.

 8.     Theresa MajeranKarma, Belcourt Brosseau Metis Awards

Theresa is a Metis woman from North Manitoba who works closely with the Aboriginal community promoting their culture amongst the young people she comes across. She also promotes the Belcourt Brosseau Metis Awards across Alberta and works on relationship building.

 9.     Aron ScrabaBlackstone Marketing

Aron has vivid interests and is the owner of Blackstone Marketing Inc, is a Licensed Realtor with Sterling Real Estate and is an award winning Director of Marketing for Dolce Vita Homes. She has more than 15 years of experience in marketing and has proved to be a great asset to many developers and realtors she works with.

10.  Crystal GrahamKasian Architecture Interior Design

Crystal is a LEED accredited, Licensed Interior Designer with the Architects Association of Alberta and a Principal at Kasian Architecture Interior Design. She has been awarded the Gold Award of Design Excellence in 2011 by the IDIBC.

Each of these women is a role model for the current generation which has to strive very hard to reach where these women are right now. The bar has been set very high indeed.
