Exchange.js Edmonton’s JavaScript Meetup

April 2 @ 6:30 PM - 9:00 PM

Exchange.js is an open community of local developers and designers, who meet monthly to discuss a wide range of topics within the JavaScript ecosystem.

It’s September! Which means an entire new year of wonderful Javascript talks, starting off with a bang! We’ve got the following topics locked and loaded for bear this month:

Practical Typescript for the Practical Developer – Ian Phillipchuk (He/Him)

Strong Typing is good in Javascript. No really, put me down and extinguish those torches and let me explain. While in a perfect world we are all wonderfully communicative and empathic programmers, who code as if our parents will be maintaining code, in reality we all have our foibles and fighting over state or typings is one of them. Typescript can remove the ambiguity and really supercharge your development in Javascript. Plus, (spoilers), its a superset so you can type as much or as little as your team desires!

A Developer’s Adventures in Entrepreneurship – Mack Male (He/Him)

I started my first company in high school and experienced some of the highs of the dotcom boom – and the crash. My second startup was probably a decade too early, and led to how I spent that decade working for a software company, rising from developer up to manager of the worldwide product development team. I’m now a full-time entrepreneur again, working on a new startup. I’ll share some of the lessons learned along the way and hopefully offer some inspiration and motivation.

Dockerize Your Dev With VS Code (in 10 minutes!) – Mark Bennett

Do you ever get frustrated with the many tools, libraries and language versions you need to install on your development machine? As a contractor who works with many different clients, I know I do! What about when you’re working in a team and want to make sure everyone is developing with the environment? In this quick demo I’ll use the new Visual Studio Code Remote Development Tools to spin up a docker container that you can use to quickly isolate and standardize your development environment. Even better, this container integrates with the VS Code tools and addons you’re likely already using!

The meetup is sponsored by our community champions Jobber, Dotdash and Punchcard, and produced each month by the Edmonton JavaScript community. As we move into a new year, we’re looking for new commitments from our old sponsors and new sponsors that want to help grow the community, so if you’re interested please get in touch!
